DJ DOWNFALL BIOGRAPHY

Hello! I’m John Stanley, and I occasionally work as DJ Downfall.

This blog is going to detail some of the stuff I have done and the stuff I am doing. I’ve been going quite a while, and I’ve done an awful lot of things, not all of which fit together neatly.

I’ve made two albums and five singles as DJD, along with many other tracks, for Where’s It’s At Is Where You Are and other labels, with another album on the way.

I’ve remixed The Postal Service, The Pains Of Being Pure At HeartKenickieLa Monja EnanaShrag, the PipettesCheap RedAllo’ DarlinHelp Stamp Out Loneliness, and many more. I did a Breezeblock for Mary Anne Hobbs on Radio 1 in 2003 which I’m dead proud of. Am going to go into more detail about the remixes on the blog when I get time.

I was once a guitarist for Dweeb who were signed to Blanco Y Negro in the late 90s (not to be confused with the Christian rock band). I was the drummer for Marine Research, along with stints with Gregory Webster and Kate’s Bush. I’m currently lead guitarist with Tender Trap. I’ve also recorded a few bands over the years, like the Duloks.

I studied music under Steve Martland and at City University in the mid-90s. I wrote a piece for two marimbas called Spire which was performed at the Meltdown Festival in 1994, and a piece for water drums performed at the Southwark Festival in 1997, which got me in trouble for soaking the place. In 2001 I wrote and edited an original soundtrack for the stage production of Chris Morris’ Blue Jam performed at the Riverside Studios by the Etcetera Theatre Company.

I’ve composed music for myriad TV programmes, most of which were buried in the middle of the night on Channel 4. I’ve composed music for comedy DVDs, language courses and Japanese shampoo manufacturers.  I’ve worked on a number of TV productions, most of which were also buried in the middle of the night on Channel 4. I’m very proud of The Trip and The Shape Of Things That Hum, though.

I’ve DJ’ed - a lot. Long, long story. Could fill a book. A couple of years ago I managed to play Koko on New Year’s Eve for Club NME. That was pretty good.

I’ve just finished working on the still-running Oramics co-creation project, and I’ve recently finished working on a project for Elizabeth Price. I’ve just finished a track for the WIAIWYA Olympics compilation album too.

I play poker. I cook really well. I’ve cheered up a lot recently. And I’m slowly making records again. x
